Burn injuries are extremely painful and can have serious complications. Treatment often requires weeks spent in the burn unit as doctors work to heal the skin and reduce the risk of infection. All of this can add up to tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and leave victims financially stressed as well as physically and emotionally scarred.
Because they often cover a large area, burn injuries are some of the most painful injuries possible. The skin is the largest organ in the body and has millions of sensory receptors, meaning even first-degree burns can be extremely painful and take some time to heal. Second- and third-degree burns, however, are even more dangerous and can cause permanent loss of motion, disfigurement and even death.
Burns can be extremely severe, sometimes requiring skin grafts, multiple surgeries, long-term rehabilitative treatment and/or physical therapy. For third-degree burns, longer hospital stays may be needed because of the increased risk of infection. In 2010 alone, there were 450,000 burn injuries that required medical treatment, according to the American Burn Association. This was just the number of burns that were treated in emergency rooms and hospitals. Many more minor burn injuries are treated at home or in doctors' offices or clinics.
Arizona's summer months bring warm nights, county fairs and Independence Day, meaning it is fireworks season. While many people enjoy watching fireworks displays, firework accidents can cause severe burn injuries. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 11,400 people were injured and eight were killed in firework-related incidents in 2013. Over half of those injuries occurred within a month of July 4.
A burn injury to a child could result in an infection that moves to a muscle or joint. In the event this occurs it could result in restriction to the child's movement for the remainder of his or her life. It's for this reason that medical treatment is immediately required. In part this is why burn injuries are so serious in nature.
